Mass Notification Toolkit

This is Not a Test, So What Does an IT Infrastructure Look Like?
The Features That Can Help Save Lives

Effective mass notification systems should offer:

Flexibility in activating the system and sending a notification
Multiple devices, such as phones or password-protected Web pages, should be able to activate the system and send a message. Some systems even allow activation remotely through PDAs or cell phones.

Different administrative rights to users
Full system access should be available to some officials, and partial access to others.

Reporting tools
The system should generate reports, tracking how many people the system contacted and on what devices. Even more helpful: the tracking of successful transmissions, the amount of time the notification process took and the notification’s progress in real time.
Support for multiple forms of communication
For major emergencies, officials need the ability to blast a message using all forms of communication simultaneously, including phone calls, e-mails and text messages—your message should be everywhere for everyone.

Support for multiple contact lists
Good systems allow the creation of an unlimited number of contact lists, to address every need. As an example, for a campus-wide notification, the contact list should include everyone at the school. For isolated issues, contact lists could include just the IT department, people responsible for specific facilities or the school’s emergency response team.
